Disk usage and volume information in OtterStat

Disk Monitoring

OtterStat monitors your disk storage and provides volume information.

Menu Bar Display

The Disk indicator shows:

  • Disk icon with available free space
  • Displays in GB or TB depending on size

Disk Details

Click the Disk indicator to see:

Volume Information

  • Volume name - The name of your startup disk
  • File system - Usually APFS on modern Macs
  • Total capacity - Total disk size
  • Used space - Space used by files and system
  • Available space - Free space remaining

Usage Visualization

A progress bar shows the percentage of disk space used.

Tips

  • Keep at least 10-15% of disk space free for optimal performance
  • macOS needs free space for virtual memory and temporary files
  • Use "Storage" in System Settings to see what's using space
  • Consider using Optimized Storage features in macOS

Common Issues

"Your disk is almost full"

If you see low disk space warnings:

  1. Empty the Trash
  2. Delete old downloads and files
  3. Clear browser caches
  4. Review and delete large files
  5. Consider offloading files to external storage or cloud
